Mission and Philosophy

Mission

As an independent, college preparatory day school for students from early childhood through upper school, MVS' mission is to challenge young people of promise to become self-sustaining learners and compassionate global citizens.

Philosophy
In order to educate the whole child and challenge each to realize his or her potential, The Miami Valley School offers a variety of curricular and extracurricular experiences reflecting various modes of learning. These experiences are appropriate for different levels of academic and personal maturation, encouraging full participation in the learning process and fostering the development of body, mind, and spirit. They enable all students to develop their physical potential and to respect the health of their bodies. They cultivate each student's intellectual curiosity, aesthetic awareness and expression, analytical and creative thinking, and excitement for learning. They summon each student to examine moral and ethical issues, to engage in careful decision-making, to develop leadership qualities, and to make responsible use of freedom.

This community of learners-students, teachers, administrators, staff, parents, trustees, and alumni/ae contributes to and benefits from a broad variety of experiences. While providing the opportunity for each student to develop a sense of self worth, MVS encourages an appreciation of and consideration for others. The school is committed to and embraces diversity of race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, physical ability, and socioeconomic status. This community inspires respect for different cultures, while fostering an awareness of global perspectives, preparing students to assume leadership roles in a complex and interdependent world.
