Fourth GradeThe fourth-grade reading program uses a study of literature to strengthen and develop basic comprehension skills. Students are exposed to nonfiction, fantasy, historical fiction, mysteries, biographies, and other genre. The students study sequencing, cause and effect relationships, inferences, use of context clues, and related vocabulary. Analysis of characterization, setting, plot, and theme is introduced. The reading program is frequently coordinated with other subject areas. The fourth-grade language arts program integrates a study of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and writing. Students participate in a variety of writing experiences including poetry, stories, journals, and research. Research skills are refined through several projects during the year. Students continue to improve oral communication skills through individual and group presentations. The language arts program correlates with every aspect of the fourth-grade curriculum. The fourth-grade mathematics program reviews place value, measurements, and the four operational functions. Two and three digit multiplication and division involving one and two digit divisors are included in the program. The study of fractions includes finding equivalencies, reducing, and adding and subtracting mixed numerals. Introductory units in geometry and decimals are also included. Problem-solving and estimation are stressed throughout the year. The fourth-grade social studies program includes a study of Ohio from prehistoric to present time. Students continue to develop map skills, focusing on United States geography. Each student chooses a state and becomes immersed in researching the history and geography of that specific state. Field trips are an integral part of the fourth grade experience and closely correlate with the curriculum. These trips may include may include Ohio Caverns, SunWatch, Miamisburg Mound, Cincinnati Art Museum, pioneer school, and a four-day trip to Glen Helen Outdoor Education Center. |
