2005-06 Immersion Updates

This year’s Immersion programs included trips to Japan, France, and India; as well as more domestic offerings focusing on Sports Management, Swamp Study, Theatre, Creative Writing, Filmmaking, Computer Building, and Flying. Each course lasted for four consecutive weeks, from mid-February to mid-March, was led by MVS faculty, and offered an intense opportunity for experiential learning unlike anything students experience during the regular academic year.

Students who pursued independent study Immersions will also present at Tuesday’s open house. Career, passion, or individual learning opportunities lie at the heart of the self-directed individualized learning project. Students create their own program and follow topics of interest not already available in the regular curriculum, or to extend work to which they may have already been introduced. The possibilities are unlimited. Some of this year’s independent study projects included a trip to Italy to take language, cooking, and culture classes; the formation of a rock band who recorded an album and performed shows; biological research; massage therapy; and dance choreography.

The intent of the Immersion program of The Miami Valley School is to provide students an alternative approach to learning through an intensive four-week program focusing on a single elected subject area. All programs provide a concentrated, in-depth study of a subject that is not offered in the regularly scheduled classes during the year.
