Experiential Learning at The Miami Valley School
Experiential learning is the cornerstone of a Miami Valley School education. Students are invited to experience their studies outside of the classroom in every division of the school. Field trips, both local and out-of-state, and assemblies pepper the lower school calendar; and transformed classrooms and costumed teachers and students are a regular picture in lower school hallways. Two-week project periods at the end of each middle school year engage students in intensive studies of archeology (sixth grade), the exploration of Appalachian culture (seventh grade), and Colonial Philadelphia or Gettysburg (eighth grade). Immersion, a four-week program focusing on a single, elected subject is a highlight of the upper school program. During Immersion, students have opportunities for experiential, in-depth study of topics not necessarily offered in regularly scheduled courses. Supported by rigorous academic classes and trips to locations local, domestic, and abroad, students immerse themselves in thematic pursuits. They may also take advantage of independent program options to follow career interests, scholarly topics, or research areas. Immersion enriches students and refreshes teachers with a wellspring of new ideas and experiences for the entire school community. |
