Nov. 17, 2009 -- Two of the world’s top American squash professionals spoke to students Friday, Nov. 13, hoping to generate interest in the game which is being adopted as a club sport in the middle and upper schools.

Julian Illingworth and Gilly Lane talked about the basics of squash and the doors it opened for them after graduating high school. Both student athletes went on to attend Ivy League schools.

“It’s really a great sport for kids that’s a great workout and a lot of fun,” Lane said. “And for a school like this, which prides itself on academics, it’s a great tool for students to get into great schools. Because of squash, we were able to go on to two of the top schools in the country.”

Illingworth is currently ranked 30th in the world, the highest ranking for an American in the modern game of softball squash. Lane is ranked 63rd in the world. Both players recently competed together for the U.S. team at the World Team Championship, finishing in ninth place.

Students interested in playing squash should contact the athletic office for more information.
