Early childhood students roll on the paint to learn about printmaking process

Students at The Miami Valley School’s Early Childhood Center created beautiful works of art Wednesday, Sept. 1, as they put to paper some of their newly learned printmaking skills.

Teacher Allison Wagner guided students through the activity, as they transferred an outline of their hands to Styrofoam plates. Using a brayer, students rolled blue paint onto the plates and then pressed them onto their final pieces of paper.

The basic relief printing exercise can be messy, but Wagner said that is part of the fun.

“The messier, the better,” she said. “It shows that the kids aren’t inhibited and are getting into their artwork. It allows them to expand their boundaries.”

This activity is part of a two-week discussion on basic lines and shapes. Earlier this week, students used their fingerprints to design matting for the projects. All of the final pieces will be displayed around the EC building.
