The Miami Valley School’s annual Convocation ceremonies were held Friday, Sept. 3. Nearly 600 students and parents packed the Lane Gymnasium, taking part in the event which marks the start of the new school year.

Headmaster Peter Benedict welcomed the event’s main speaker, Roger Meike ’81, the school’s newly inducted Distinguished Alumnus.

Meike, who serves as the senior research director at Oracle Corporation, the world’s largest business software company, spoke about his extensive technology-filled career. He also demonstrated one of his projects, Sun SPOT, a wireless sensor platform for development of radio-controlled sensor networks, robotics, and personal consumer electronics.

Meike credited the school’s Immersion program for allowing him to deeply pursue his interests. He also thanked the school and MVS teachers for inspiring and encouraging him to ask questions.

The Convocation ceremonies closed with the traditional red carnation and book exchange between the senior class and kindergartners/first graders.
