International Admission

The Miami Valley School invites students from all over the world to attend. In the 2021-22 school year, MVS welcomed 14 international students from 6 countries. Some students stay for just one semester or one year and some students stay for multiple years to include their entire high school careers. MVS welcomes international students to apply to enter at any grade.

Applicants are evaluated thoroughly to ensure that they have the greatest potential for success in the English speaking environment of a rigorous American academic institution.

Application Process

Families may apply directly to MVS by submitting the online application and other forms detailed on the Admissions Process web page.

Once the application and supporting documents are received, MVS staff will interview the student using a video program such as Zoom. The student should be prepared to answer all questions in English and may be asked to write an essay during the interview and read an English passage.

Tuition & Fees

Annual tuition for the 2022-23 school year is $32,000 for international students in the upper school. This tuition includes services such as homestay support, extra student support, and health insurance if needed.

Need-based financial assistance is available for families who qualify. Find information about the need-based aid application process here.

The enrollment deposit is $1000 for students not receiving tuition assistance and $500 for international students receiving assistance. The deposit is paid when the enrollment contract is submitted and prior to each subsequent year of attendance. The deposit is credited towards tuition and is not refundable.

International students may incur incidental and everyday expenses. These costs vary and may include the cost of orientation, books, laptop, lunch, Immersion, and, when required, English language support instruction.

Host Families

MVS enrolls students from around the world every year who need host families. Students stay with their host families during the school year (August through early June), possibly returning home during winter break. We hope that students will remain with the same family during their entire career at MVS, and we ask host families to commit to at least one year at a time.

If you are interested in hosting an international student, please contact the director of enrollment at anne.dettmer@miamivalleyschool.org.

International students become a member of their host family and are treated as such. Host families are chosen by the international program and preference is given to MVS families with students of a similar age in the home.

The Immersion Method

The Miami Valley School Immersion Method is based on the knowledge that learning is rooted in direct experience, which leads to engagement and the discovery of passion by each individual student. Learning is more than just what occurs in the classroom through books and lessons. Education is something that happens everywhere, and The Miami Valley School ensures that our students learn that lesson.

Everything we do at The Miami Valley School is carefully sculpted to create a community of student and adult learners who are supported in pursuit of their individual passions. Our staff and faculty collaborate with the students to help them pursue the information they are curious about. There is always the risk of failure when exploring a new subject. Not all ventures are successful, and that is a lesson for the students as well. This is part of the immersion process – learning to deal with the successes and failures as we go through life and moving on with the lessons they give us.
