Cinco De Mayo across the classrooms

June 30, 2018
Miami Valley School

Cinco De Mayo marks a time to celebrate and, in the MVS classroom, a cultural opportunity to learn and give back.

In lower school, Kindergartners and first graders got to work in Senora Swift’s language classroom, thanks to the generous support of mini grants from the Parent Association!

Students learned a little Mexican history, worked on a variety of art projects, listened to mariachi music, and sampled chips and salsa in honor of Cinco de mayo.

The Kindergartners made maracas and first graders made painted sombreros which complemented the second grade painted ponchos.

The fun continued in middle school as Senora Conroy’s Spanish 1B class sponsored Fund Friday last week, holding a bake sale of Hispanic goodies.

The Hispanic delicacies sold so well they raised $150 to be donated to Children’s World Impact for Ecuadorian earthquake relief. At MVS, we know we’re educating compassionate global citizens. It’s especially gratifying to get thank you notes like this as proof:
conroyphotoPlease thank your students for us! It is gratifying to know that they are learning about what it means to support others in this big world. Your contribution to the Ecuador Relief Fund will go towards rebuilding homes for families with children. We work through local contacts which means we also provide employment for local residents. So, as a team, we are able to help reconstruct areas impacted by the earthquake.

The 5th of May was a special day at MVS with plenty of learning and giving!
